Inov-8 Race Ultra 290 Running Shoe First Look!

My review of the Race Ultra 290 is now live! You can find it here

July 2014 will see a significant new addition to Inov-8’s product range with the release of the Race Ultra 290, their first shoe aimed specifically at the ultra runner.

  • 18mm Heel / 10mm Forefoot / 8mm Drop
  • 290g Weight for a UK size 8
  • Meta Shank 3 Rock Plate
  • ‘Generous-Fitting’ last
  • Tri-Endurance outsole with 3 different rubber compounds
  • 360 degree rand for durability
  • Compatible with Inov-8’s new Race Ultra gaiter which will help prevent ingress of stones and debris

There is clearly as significant overlap between Inov-8’s trail/fell running customer base and the ultra community so it makes a lot of sense for them to venture into this seemingly ever-growing market. I also think the 290 could attract new runners to the brand who find their other shoes a bit too minimal for their taste.

Durability and protection are at the forefront of the design whilst the cushioning and extra drop (by Inov-8’s standards) are aimed at providing some forgiveness for tired legs and feet. I’m going to be running in a couple of ultra distance events later this summer and I have a test pair of the 290 on the way so I’m looking forward to putting them through their paces.

A full review will follow soon but in the meantime more information on the shoe and it’s development can be found here at the Inov-8 website.
